Queen Elizabeth Park in Paekakariki, on the Kapiti Coast, was once a thriving unofficial gay-popular nudist beach. The dunes here were notorious for their high activity, with men nicknamed “meerkats” due to their habit of standing up to spot others, often engaging in public acts. However, erosion caused by high king tides has significantly reduced the dunes, and as a result, the area has shifted from a nudist beach to more of a cruising spot. Today, it remains a location for gay cruising, particularly near the access road that leads to the beach from SH1. The park is accessible through the QEII Park gates, with the first left road leading to the beach, where cruising activity is common.
