In 1978, David Yoder left Los Angeles for the hills of Northeast Tennessee and built a three-room log cabin on the site that would become Timberfell Lodge. After successfully hosting gay guests during the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville, he remodeled his home and converted it into a full-time, men-only Bed and Breakfast, opening Timberfell Lodge in the summer of 1985.
The lodge quickly grew in popularity, leading to expansions by 1990, including a 20’ x 40’ heated swimming pool and adjoining pool house with a beer bar, bath house, redwood sauna, and steam room. In 1992, the Barn was converted into a dormitory for summer staff, and the Annex was added to provide more guest rooms. A clothing-optional policy was also introduced and well-received.
In January 2000, Timberfell Lodge was sold to new owners who recognized its great potential. They aimed to revive the pioneering spirit and energy established by David Yoder, transforming Timberfell Lodge into the premier men’s retreat in the Southeast United States for the new millennium.
